It was just a little over one hundred years ago that the character of Sherlock Holmes was created, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant man, he spent his time cracking impossible cases and he sparked the imagination of many a reader by in the 1890s. His most famous works included A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four and The Valley of Fear, but it was perhaps The Hound of Baskervilles, Sir Doyle’s book about a mysterious hound (that turned out to be something quite different than a hound) that was causing trouble, that truly sky-rocketed the character into popularity. Since then, thousands of new readers have picked up the book series and have learned to love the genius character.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle probably didn’t envision his character of Sherlock Holmes becoming quite the household name that it is today. He probably also wouldn’t have foreseen him being the star of his own television series like he is today. How could he really, since the television didn’t even get invented until 1927, just 3 years before the iconic author’s death. At the very least he certainly wouldn’t have expected that his character would be seen in full color screens today! He’s found his way into various movies, including the popular Guy Ritchie versions, but we just can’t seem to get enough of BBC’s version of the character in the show, Sherlock.
Of course, Sherlock, the British Crime drama, follows the adventures of a modern re-imagination of the logic wielding detective and his reliable sidekick, Dr. Watson. The role of Sherlock Holmes is played by the lovely and extremely talented Benedict Cumberbatch and Dr. Watson is played by the equally talented Martin Freeman. The television series has brought us one of the most entertaining versions of the classic literary character, using modern day technology to solve crimes.
