It's a guaranteed symptom of childhood.  Who knows where it developed originally, but we have yet to see a kiddo come into the world that isn't already afflicted.  Some have it in phases and may even go long periods of time where they seem to be totally sane and a completely viable candidate for a future, functional member of society.  Then, who knows what it might be... usually chocolate... and the crazy comes out.

Whether this is a trait that eventually fades in the kiddo as they move into adulthood or remains with them, dormant or active, forever seems to be on a case by case basis.  But, treatment for childhood nutso behavior is pretty limited.  All we can advise is that you lean into it.  Make it seem normal.  Give them an outlet.  If they think nutso is normal... you know... reverse psychology?

The best way that we can assist you is by transforming your tyke into an equally nutso being for a while.  This Child's Squirrel Costume is clearly the way to go.  The comfy faux fur jumpsuit fits easily and features that dark gray/brown and a white belly.  The stuffed tail is attached by a clear cord on the zipper and the hood Hook and Loop fasteners for a secure fit to give your kiddo those alert ears.  The brown polyfoam acorn can be stuffed for shape, but make sure you don't take it once they've got it!
