Who are the main characters in Sailor Moon?

Sailor Moon Characters

You may have noticed that the name "Sailor Moon" has a vague space theme at first glance. This is only more apparent as you meet the rest of the Sailor Scouts, who are all named after the planets. (And yes, that includes Pluto!) The Sailor Scouts make up most of the main cast, along with allies like Tuxedo Mask and the cat guardians. Of course, you also have the main villains and plenty of family, friends, sidekick characters, and the villain of the week. There are some differences between the manga and anime versions of the characters, so we'll be focusing on the anime here. We'll break down some of the main characters in Sailor Moon, who you may encounter when shopping for a Sailor Moon fan.

Inner Sailor Scouts

Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon

The show's namesake, Sailor Moon, is the alter-ego of schoolgirl Serena Tsukino. (Or Tsukino Usagi in the Japanese version.) She acts as the leader of the rest of the Sailor Scouts, as well as the reincarnation of Princess Serenity. Serena was given a locket by her guardian cat, Luna, which allowed her to transform into Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon has many powers, with fans debating her ability to defeat characters like Goku and Superman in a fight. With Serena's ability to access other forms like Super Sailor Moon and Sailor Cosmos, she's basically a goddess.

Sailor Mercury

Sailor Mercury

Known as Amy Anderson in the American version or Ami Mizuno in Japanese, she is the girl who becomes Sailor Mercury. Amy was the first Sailor Scout to be found by Serena and Luna. She possesses a genius-level intellect and is excellent with computers. Of course, Amy becomes the team strategist. Amy's element is water, which gives her a variety of water-related attacks and abilities.

Sailor Mars

Sailor Mars

Our next Sailor Scout is Sailor Mars, also known as Raye Hino. She is actually a Shinto priestess, and she works at a temple with her grandfather. As Sailor Mars, Raye has control over the element of fire. Unlike many of the other Sailor Scouts, Raye has some abilities she can use in her human form, possibly because of her connection with her spiritual senses as a Shinto priestess. These include a psychic connection, some premonitions, and dispelling evil spirits.

Sailor Jupiter

Sailor Jupiter

Lita Kino (or Makoto Kino) is Sailor Jupiter, who has the power of electricity. One of the sportier Sailor Scouts, she's an expert martial artist. (Granted, she also transferred school due to fighting.) Lita is also the tallest of all the inner Scouts, standing at 5' 6" tall. She loves to cook and bake, and Lita is also a bit of a hopeless romantic.

Sailor Venus

Sailor Venus

In many ways, the civilian form of Sailor Venus, Mina Aino, is very similar to Sailor Moon. She's a long-haired blonde who often has her head in the clouds, and she's clumsy and loves to eat, just like Serena! Mina also has a white cat named Artemis, another guardian cat like Serena's Luna. Artemis technically awakened Venus before even Sailor Moon, so Mina spent some time masquerading as Sailor V. It's somewhat unclear what Sailor Venus's elemental power is as her attacks seem to be related to light. Still, some theories point to having powers pertaining to metal. She is also the true leader of the Sailor Scouts because Sailor Moon is technically a princess.

Outer Sailor Scouts

Sailor Pluto

Sailor Pluto

The first of the outer Sailor Scouts to make an appearance, Sailor Pluto is the oldest of all the Scouts. Her alter-ego is Setsuna Meiou, and she appears to be either an older teen or perhaps even a young adult. Sailor Pluto is the guardian of space and time, and therefore, she was tasked with guarding the door of Space-Time. She wears a chain with four keys around her waist, allowing her to travel through time and various realities.

Sailor Uranus

Sailor Uranus

Haruka Tenoe is the civilian form of Sailor Uranus. She dresses in unisex or masculine clothing and sports a short, boyish hairstyle. Her powers are heavily influenced by the wind and the sky, and she fights with a sword. Haruka also has a relationship with Sailor Neptune, which is more apparent in the Japanese anime because it was primarily censored in the American version, which turned the pair into cousins.

Sailor Neptune

Sailor Neptune

Companion to Sailor Uranus, Sailor Neptune is portrayed as elegant and sophisticated. When in her civilian form, she goes by the name Michiru Kaiou. While Sailor Mercury already has powers associated with water, Neptune's affinity lies with the ocean. She also has a talent for precognition and can generally sense impending danger before the other Sailor Scouts. Michiru is artistically gifted and can often be seen playing her violin or painting.

Sailor Saturn

Sailor Saturn

The last of all the Sailor Scouts to awaken, Hotaru Tomoe, is Sailor Saturn. She has a very shy personality, and sometimes, she can seem quite cold. This may be because Sailor Saturn has powers over darkness, with strong connections to silence, nothingness, and death. Hotaru herself has the gift of healing in human form and some degree of premonition.

Other Sailor Moon Allies

Tuxedo Mask

Tuxedo Mask

Tuxedo Mask is the love interest of Sailor Moon. His alter-ego is Mamoru Chiba, or sometimes Darien Shields in the English adaptation. His role is the guardian of the Earth, and he has some powers, but to a lesser degree than the Sailor Scouts. Tuxedo mask can heal and sense danger, and he has a telepathic connection with Serena. He's also seen using roses as weapons when in Tuxedo Mask form.

Luna

Luna

Luna is Sailor Moon's talking black cat and guardian. She has a crescent moon on her forehead and actually comes from the Moon. Luna gives the Sailor Scouts their transformation items and helps awaken them when they are in civilian form and have yet to realize they are a Sailor Scout.

Artemis

Artemis

Like Luna, Artemis is a cat from the Moon who acts as a mentor for the Sailor Scouts. Artemis is a white cat who also bears a crescent moon shape on his forehead. He lives with Minako, Sailor Venus. Technically, he awakened Sailor Venus even before Sailor Moon, but we don't meet her as a character in the anime until later in the first season.

Sailor Chibi Moon

Sailor Chibi Moon

Arguably one of the most adorable characters in Sailor Moon (and also one of the most annoying), Chibiusa Tsukino (who goes by Rini in the English adaptation) is a very short little girl with pink hair. She transforms into Sailor Chibi Moon and has powers related to those of her parents, Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask. There's also a corrupted, grown-up version of Chibiusa who goes by "Black Lady". She acts as a villain in Sailor Moon Crystal.

Queen Serenity

Queen Serenity

Queen Serenity acts as the ruler of the Moon Kingdom. She is also technically Serena Tsukino's mother, although she sent the Sailor Scouts and Prince Endymion into the future where they could be reborn on Earth. (Let's just say that it's complicated!) Her Spirit meets the Sailor Scouts when they end up on the Moon, where she explains some of their complex history.

Sailor Moon Villains

Queen Beryl

Queen Beryl

The main villain of Sailor Moon, Queen Beryl, is determined to release the Negaforce and rule the world. Even before the anime started, Queen Beryl historically destroyed the Moon Kingdom. She forced Queen Serenity to use what little power she had left to reincarnate the Sailor Scouts as future heroes. Queen Beryl is an extremely powerful being with many magical abilities, including mind control, energy absorption, and the ability to summon and control monsters.

Prince Diamond

Prince Diamond

Prince Diamond, also known as Prince Demande, is featured as a villain in Sailor Moon R. He has the power of hypnosis and can shoot energy beams. He aims to take over Earth, where he clashes with Sailor Moon and the other guardians. Prince Diamond also falls in love with Sailor Moon, who does not love him back, but he still tries to hypnotize her into loving him. (So evil.)

Dr. Tomoe

Dr. Tomoe

In a world filled with galactic evil and people with incredible cosmic powers, we guess they're not running the entire gamut without an evil scientist. Known as Doctor Tomoe or Professor Suichi Tomoe, he is the leader of the Bureau of Bad Behavior. A lab explosion that killed his wife and daughter and nearly himself led to his possession by Germatoid, who saved his life but also corrupted him. He is also the father of Hotaru (Sailor Saturn), who was caught in the disaster and revived by Mistress 9.

Queen Nehelenia

Queen Nehelenia

When we get to the 4th season of Sailor Moon, we meet Queen Nehelenia. She is the evil leader of the Dark Moon Circus and is obsessed with obtaining eternal youth and beauty. She had previously been a kind and beautiful ruler, but much like the Evil Queen, she saw her waning beauty in a mirror, and it all went downhill from there. Her abilities include shooting waves of dark energy and spider-like threads and an incredible resistance to attacks.

Sailor Galaxia

Sailor Galaxia

What happens when Chaos itself corrupts the most powerful Sailor in the galaxy? You get Sailor Galaxia. In order to defeat Chaos, Sailor Galaxia sealed it within herself, which unfortunately also led to her corruption. She began attacking and destroying entire planets, making her essentially the final boss of the Sailor Moon anime. She can fire energy beams, create powerful barriers, and zoom about the galaxy during combat.
