March 2nd is the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day, which also happens to be Dr. Seuss’s birthday. What better excuse do you need to celebrate reading? There are many fun things you can do with your child, like dressing up as their favorite character while reading or trying a science kit with a book theme. If you’re an educator, check out some of the NEA’s Read Across America’s activity ideas. Kids might not always love to read but making it fun will get them engaged. And you never know, they might learn to love reading! To help bring the celebration of reading and literacy to your home year-round, check out these great gift ideas. You’ll also get ideas of how to celebrate Read Across America.
Books help children in so many different ways, from learning words and reading to helping their imagination grow. Spending just 15 minutes a day reading can greatly impact their lives. With so many books out there, you’re sure to find ones that you and your child will love. Let them travel to Hogwarts and join the gang in fighting Lord Voldemort. Or take them under the sea with a Narwhal. Help make the experience better by asking your child questions about the book. Make them think of creative answers, like why didn’t Ferdinand fight? The options are endless! And with book sets, you can enjoy many stories with your kid’s favorite character.
Book and toy gift sets
A book and a toy! What could be better? Book and toy gift sets make the perfect gift for your book lovers. They can play out the story as you read it to them. Once you're done reading, they'll be able to continue the fun on their own by creating a new story for the characters. The plush characters also make wonderful naptime buddies. If you're in the habit of reading your child a bedtime or naptime story, they can snuggle up with some of their favorite storybook characters as they fall asleep. Talk about sweet dreams!
To put a different spin on Read Across America, you can get your child engaged and learning with these great science kits featuring Clifford and The Magic School Bus. They’ll be having so much fun they won’t realize they are learning. The Magic School Bus has a STEM kit for almost everything. Like engineering, chemistry, space, volcanoes, dinosaurs, and slime, just to name a few. You’re sure to find one that suits your child’s interest.
Dr. Seuss Gifts
Since Read Across America is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday, why not celebrate it? Many schools do this by having children wear the iconic hat from Cat in the Hat to school. You’ll get on the teacher's good side by bringing them a Dr. Seuss cup or mug as a present, too. Get the party started at home with the “I Can Do That!” game. This family-friendly game will get everyone up, moving and having a great time.
Storybook Character Costumes
Does your child love to dress up? What better way to read their favorite book than dressing as the character? Make it even more fun by having them act out the scene. You’re never too old for dress up! What better way to do the STEM kit activity than with Miss Frizzle herself?
